The impact of sleep on your working life

Everyone knows it. You haven't slept properly and the working day suddenly seems very confusing. It doesn't take much for us to get tired during the working day or have difficulty concentrating and therefore perform less well. If you go to bed just a little later than usual, if the summer heat makes it difficult to get a good night's sleep, or if you are woken up by small family members during the night, this can have consequences for the following day's profits.

Sleep deprivation can affect social relationships

However, it is important to note that our need for sleep is individual. As well as affecting your performance at work, it can also affect your social relationships with colleagues. Sleep deprivation can shorten your workday and make you less willing to engage in conversations or socialize with colleagues, which in the long run can have an impact on your psychological work environment.

This is according to a new study from the University of South Florida, published in the journal Sleep Health. The study involved 130 people with at least one school-age child. When the quality or quantity of sleep decreases, people often feel stressed the next day, which affects both their work and personal lives.

The fear of sleeping badly can make you sleep badly

The fear of sleeping badly can increase the risk of actually sleeping badly. This means that you shouldn't go around worrying about whether you got enough sleep last night and whether you can perform well enough during the week. This worry can be the reason why you don't fall asleep at night.

Good sleep is an important factor for your overall well-being, but we can easily manage with less sleep at times. For the vast majority of people, periods of poor sleep go away on their own.

Tips for good sleep

Some general tips for good sleep include not consuming too much liquid before bedtime to avoid night-time toilet visits. In addition, it is a good idea to avoid screen time, large meals, alcohol and tobacco, and hard physical exercise before bedtime. A dark bedroom with a temperature of 18 - 21 degrees and a good bed provide good conditions for a good night's sleep.
